Proxy Server FAQs

What exactly is a proxy server? It’s a type of buffer between a computer and the internet pages the computer is accessing (such as web sites, FTP archives, etc.). Anytime data is requested from the computer, that request is sent through the proxy first as a type of buffer thereby eliminating the IP address of the computer being used. Why would someone have a need for a proxy server? There are three main reasons. First, it allows anonymity as web sites are being accessed. Second, it can allow for unrestricted surfing some companies block portions of their sites but with a proxy server these can often be accessed. And last, it allows for efficiency with regard to speed since some proxies have web caching enabling (in other words when a proxy transfers a web page it remembers it and the next time the page is requested it is pulled from the proxy memory which speeds up access). Is there a difference between http and web proxies? Yes, simply put an http proxy is a proxy with ip and port which means the browser on a computer only has to be configured once. With a web proxy there is no configuration users merely visit the address of the web proxy and enter the URL they wish to visit. Is a free anonymous proxy absolutely anonymous, as in 100 percent? Unfortunately it’s difficult to guarantee absolute anonymity from a free proxy site. Why is it so important to maintain anonymity? Users leave trails of their IP address in web server logs, chat room logs, peer-to-peer file sharing systems, newsgroups, mail servers, and mailing lists (to name a few) which makes it possible to be tracked and every move you make on the computer leaves a continuing trail of activity and personal information.
